Y2K Trends That You Have To Try

It’s no surprise trends from the late 90s and early 2000s are making a comeback. We’ve seen the videos of TikTok users trying to achieve the Y2K aesthetic, and we’ve seen many stores label their items as “vintage” to increase sales. Fashion follows a cycle that repeats itself every two decades. Here are some of my favourite Y2K trends that will definitely bring back some nostalgic childhood memories.

1. Baguette Bags

These small shoulder bags were popularized by Fendi in the late 90s and early 2000s. You may remember Sarah Jessica Parker wearing them on the TV series Sex in the City. Throughout the show, her character Carrie Bradshaw makes it clear that “this is not a bag, this is a baguette”.  Recently, Fendi released a new campaign called #BaguetteFriendsForever to remarket the design. The popularity of the style has encouraged other brands to make their own versions of the purse, which is why we see so many dupes at fast-fashion retailers like Zara. Over time, other designer brands have also chosen to relaunch vintage collections that were popular in the early 2000s. Examples include Prada with their Re-Edition 2000s Nylon Purse and Christian Dior with their Saddle Bag.

2. Low Rise Pants

There are definitely mixed opinions on whether low-rise pants should be making a comeback. While some people think they look terrible, I happen to think they stand out and add versatility to my closet that mainly consists of high-waisted jeans. In the past, we’ve seen celebrities like Paris Hilton rocking low-rise pants and now we see models like Bella Hadid bringing them back.

3. Baby Tanks

Remember shopping at Justice when you were younger? If you told me something I wore in kindergarten would reappear in my closet a decade later, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. These fitted cropped tops are great pieces for the summer that can be worn with almost anything. My favourite way to style them is by wearing them over fitted long sleeves with a mock neck.

4. Butterfly Tops

You’ve probably seen tutorials on how to make these tops all over TikTok. There’s no doubt these butterfly tanks carry a unique pattern and add a pop of colour to any outfit. This is a great statement piece that’s perfect for any occasion because it can be dressed up with a fitted skirt or dressed down with a pair of loose jeans.

5. Cropped Cardigans

Cropped cardigans are extremely comfy and a great way to layer your clothes! They can also be worn in various ways: either buttoned, unbuttoned, or around your shoulders. Although I’ve always preferred buying neutral-toned cardigans because they are easier to style, influencers like Ruby Lyn have encouraged me to branch out by purchasing bright-printed cardigans. I love thrifting cardigans, but stores like Aritzia and Oak and Fort also have a great selection.

There’s no doubt the late 90s and early 2000s has made a profound impact on the fashion industry. If I could give you a piece of advice, I would recommend keeping the tops you bought a few years back. Fashion is always evolving and it’s hard to predict what styles will be in trend next. However, as we’ve seen with baguette bags and low-rise pants, fashion has a history of repeating itself.
