“Chanel is the worst thing that has ever happened to celebrity red carpet looks”

With the Governor's ball, the Oscars, and the Babylon Australian Premiere recently occurring, it would be criminal to disregard the one thing on everyone's mind… Margot Robbie's everlasting contract with Chanel is coming to an end. Since 2018, Margot has been stuck in the same cycle of frilly dresses, boring power suits, and monochromatic colours. While this is no hate against the iconic Chanel looks and their brand, many have found that the collaboration between the two has not been a good match. In fact, people have referred to Margot as a “hostage to fashion,” explaining that she looks unhappy in the wardrobe and must be “set free from Chanel’s shackles.”

Margot was last seen representing Chanel in late October 2022. Following this, she was spotted at the Governor's ball styled in a deep olive green Bottega Veneta dress. Stylist Kate Young has been challenged with premiering the actress in something other than the classic Chanel look - and she has outdone herself. The form-fitting cut-out dress was a massive hit in the eyes of critics, her fans, and by the looks of it, Margot herself. Grazia published “Margot Robbie delivered a one-two punch of fashion brilliance with this gown by Bottega Veneta,” which is a great shift from what was being written of her previous fashion exploits..

On that note, her Oscars gown left people speechless as she presented awards onstage. Margot was pictured wearing a beautiful off-the-shoulder, chic Armani and has never looked better. The slick, black sequence dress contrasted beautifully with her pin-straight blonde hair and smokey eye aesthetic. It has been refreshing to see Margot's attire fully flourish - matching her A-list, it-girl, reputation. Thus, making us question if her ridgid contract restricted Margot from dressing to her genuine character and comfort level. Did she ever like her runway looks pre 2022?

While many believe Margot looks more true to herself after breaking the contract, we still find her repping the brand. During this year's Golden Globes, she sported a blush halter neck Chanel gown and a smile from ear to ear. This brings into question if Margot is trying to rebuild the Chanel reputation after years of hateful comments. While some were pleasantly surprised by the styling of this dress, others could not believe what they were seeing. The hateful comments began once again, stating, “free Margot Robbie'' and “Chanel is the worst thing that has ever happened to celebrity red carpet looks.”

While the actress has been periodically spotted in a Chanel jacket or gown, it is clear that the end of her ambassadorship has left room for many iconic looks to come. It is usual for celebrities to partner with luxury brands; I mean, we see it all the time. That being said, it is important that the brand you are supporting reciprocates the benefits. Less than a year out of the Chanel contract, we have seen Margot in some astonishing event wear and even better street style. We can now see her and her stylist, Kate Young, play with new silhouettes, brands, and accessories. So, if you see her sporting a Chanel blazer now and then, put down the pitchforks and let her play with her newly found freedom in the fashion world.
